This morning, two fellow teachers and I went to visit the home of one of our best students, Xiulan/Taylor, and we met her mother and adorable brother, who’s in first grade. Xiulan is one of our best students –– on recent tests, she’s tested first in Chinese, English, Government, and Biology. We hung out for a while, and ended up staying for lunch, which Xiulan and her mother made for us. Then, we talked with her and her mother about how she can work even harder to test into better high schools, which will further her chances to enter a university. Because competition is so fierce in China –- education is only guaranteed until ninth grade, and then you must test high enough to enter high school –- there is no time for slacking.
Overall, it was a great visit…her family was so kind to us, and we only really had good news to bring. Tonight, we’ll tackle another challenge –– speaking with a student who plans to quit school and move to a city to 打工, that is, find work.
